It is a very large component of connective tissue, especially hair, skin, nails, tendons and ligaments. Especially collagen types 1 and 3 are found in these structures.
A variety of environmental factors can attack collagen depots: For example, stress, smoking, chronic diseases and also the drop in estrogen levels during menopause can cause the body to have a higher demand for collagen than it can obtain from the normal diet.
